Desolation Sound. This is a very popular anchoring spot for yachts during the summer. The area was named by Captain George Vancouver, the English Naval explorer, in 1791. When his ships visited the area it was wet and shrouded in mist:  he thought it 'the most desolate place he had seen'. He just picked a bad day!
